How chapters work

A chapter explains one topic in a few sections, with example sentences.

• Any Chinese word: tap it for its reading and meaning, and to keep it.
• 🔊 says a sentence aloud.
• Practice, beside the chapter: a set for each section and one for the whole chapter, one exercise at a time, to try as often as you like. A miss comes back until you get it right.
• The deck: the chapter's words as a game, to play as often as you like.
• Texts: short pieces of Chinese written with what the chapter teaches, each on a page of its own.
• The words: beside the chapter, section by section, with their pinyin and meaning.
• How Chinese is shown: pinyin, simplified or traditional characters, English. The button at the top of the page, or the keys p, t and e.
• I've read it, at the end, marks the chapter read.
